I attended a cancer prevention series this spring here in Halifax, N.S. Although I was taken aback with the information that was given, I was thankful that this information is available.
Since WW11 there has been approximately 80,000 new chemicals introduced to our world. Unfortunately most of these chemicals have not been tested to see what harm they are causing to our bodies and our environment. The ones that have been tested have been tested by themselves and NOT when two or more of these chemicals have been combined. I’m not sure about you but the last time I checked the ingredients that some of these cleaning products contain, I have NEVER seen just one chemical listed.
Down East was started by a local entrepreneur who was growing increasingly concerned with the amount of chemicals that were being added to our everyday products. If you are not aware, chemicals are in our cleaning products, hair products, hygiene products including shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, gel and even our make up. This is a very disturbing trend, not to mention an unnecessary evil. It is nice to know that someone here in our own back yard, has decided to do something about it, and in return has helped us immensely. (Those of us that choose to use these Eco-friendly products)
I am always amazed that the European countries seem to have gotten a hold on this problem to a certain degree, and have banned some products because of their harmful effects on health and the environment. Acrylamide comes to mind right away. This is a hazardous chemical that occurs when you re-fry things such as french fries, as well as a known carcinogen. I believe it was W5 or Marketplace that first brought this to our attention and Health Canada has said that it is safe and has decided not to ban it. HUH???
I found out in this session that bounce and liquid fabric softeners are one of the worst things you can use in your home. I threw out my bounce sheets and purchased dryer balls to use instead. Did you know that the air inside buildings is approximately ten times more toxic than the air outdoors. This happens because of all the new chemicals being added to lengthen the life of a product or to simply make it scent free. Yes, that’s right! All of us, me included, used scent free products thinking they were better. Wrong!! They add another chemical to mask the scent! Wow, didn’t even think of that until it was pointed out to me.
I know it is difficult to change your lifestyle and sometimes it can be more expensive as well. I think it is important to have the information and every little change will help you and your environment. I have made a decision to do what I can when it comes to limiting my exposure and two changes I made right away were the dryer balls and using Down East products for cleaning my home, dishes and clothing.
